Band 9 Answer with Explanation and Hard Vocabulary
The maps illustrate the transformation of Beechwood Farm between 1990 and the present day,

Overall, the farm has shifted from a primarily livestock- and crop-based operation towards a more diversified and commercialised site,
marked by the introduction of new buildings, modern farming infrastructure, and recreational features.

In 1990, the northern side of the farm was dominated by sheep grazing land and a barn, while the central area consisted mainly of vegetable fields.
To the south, there was farmland dedicated to fruit trees, alongside a farmhouse and minimal infrastructure.

Today, most of these original features have been either relocated, upgraded, or replaced.
The sheep area has been converted into a solar farm, and the old barn has given way to a new storage building. The vegetable and fruit plots have been reorganised to accommodate greenhouses and parking spaces, indicating expansion towards agritourism or commercial production. Additionally, the presence of a children’s play area and seating space near the farmhouse highlights a shift towards visitor-friendly facilities, reflecting the farm’s broader modernisation.

Step-by-step process ( Why this is Band 9 answer )
Step 1: Understand the Task Type
This is a Map / Diagram Change Over Time question in IELTS Writing Task 1.
We need to:
Describe changes
Compare past and present
Highlight major trends
No opinions or reasons should be added.

Step 2: Paraphrase the Question Carefully
A Band 9 introduction must:
Change the wording
Keep the meaning
Use high-level structures
Example techniques used:
"The maps illustrate" instead of "The diagrams show"
"Transformation" instead of "changes"
"Between 1990 and the present day" instead of repeating the same phrase
This shows lexical flexibility and avoids repetition.

Step 3: Write a Strong Overview
This is the MOST important part for Band 8–9.
You must identify:
The big picture
The main developments
The overall trend
In this answer, the overview highlights:
Shift from traditional farming → modern diversified site
Appearance of new commercial and recreational features
This shows you understand the primary trend, not just the details.

Step 4: Organise Details Logically
A Band 9 answer needs coherent structure.
The details section is organised by location, not by random features.
Approach used:
Describe 1990 layout (north, central, south).
Describe today’s layout in parallel order.
Make direct comparisons to show change.
This mirrors IELTS logic and increases cohesion.

Step 5: Use High-Level Grammar
Band 9 grammar requires:
Complex sentences
Passive structures
Modifier clauses
Precise tense control
Examples from the answer:
“Most of these features have been relocated…” (present perfect passive)
“The sheep area has been converted into a solar farm…” (passive transformation)
“Marked by the introduction…” (participial phrase)
These structures prove advanced writing skills.

Step 6: Use High-Level Vocabulary
You must show range and precision, not “big words for no reason”.
The sample uses:
Farming terminology (grazing land, plots, facilities)
Transformation vocabulary (converted, reorganised, upgraded)
Modernisation vocabulary (commercialised, infrastructure, visitor-friendly)

Step 7: Keep It Cohesive and Smooth
Connect ideas naturally with:
Additionally
While
Whereas
To the north / south / central area
This creates logical flow and prevents a “list-like” description.
